2020: Masks for Relief

In an effort to contribute to the relief towards the COVID19 pandemic, I have created two mask patterns that are simple in design and easy to sew. The patterns are true to scale on 8.5in x 11in paper, and can be printed.

These masks can be sewn on an industrial machine, a portable hobby machine, & can be hand sew for those who do not have machinery at home. For those with no machinery, you will need at least a pack of hand sewing needles, a pack of pins, safety pins, and thread. The patterns can be downloaded FOR FREE via this link. If you want to contribute to the COVID19 relief and make masks, please feel free to use the patterns provided.

These patterns also allow for a pocket to be included in the design if you wish to include an approved medical filter inside.

READING THE PATTERN: A quick glossary

-Center Front: The exact center of the front of your pattern

-Cut 1: Cutting 1 pc of the material (materials listed underneath

-Cut 2: Cutting 2 pcs of the material

-Face: Fabric that faces outside; the correct fabric side of your garment

Grain line: Straight grains (latitude threads), Cross grains (longitude threads (selvage to selvage)), and Bias (45 angle of the straight grain and cross grain)

-Lining: Fabric that faces inside; the 'wrong side' or inside of your garment, typically against the body.

Pattern: The flat 2-dimensional instructional that the construction of your garment is reliant on.

THESE PATTERS ARE NOT CDC APPROVED. THESE PATTERNS CAN BE COMPLETED WITH EITHER THE HAIR TIE METHOD OR WITH THE LOOSE 'SHOE LACE' METHOD (shoe lace method depicted in the slides) IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU USE NATURAL FIBER BLENDS FOR YOUR MASKS. MASKS SHOULD BE HAND WASHED.

This page will be updated periodically throughout the spring and summer with how-to's and other instructionals. I have also set up a GOFUNDME for financing the materials for the masks I will be making and donating. Happy Sewing!

UPDATE:

A BIG thank you to the donors who were able to make this project happen! We were able to supply +100 masks which were distributed to nurses & essential workers in Brooklyn, to protesters that have been in support of the Black Lives Matter movement throughout New York City, and back to donors & supporters.

STATEMENT FROM A.S. :
"A lot has happened over the Spring and Summer of 2020. From assisting front-line workers with equipment, to supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and other national & global causes, it's encouraging to see people from around the world come together to support one another. This page will also serve as a master post filled with links to articles, petitions, and resources to different causes."
